17 May 2017 Cobram Courier, Cobram VIC (General News) The historic Barmah Punt will receive $200 000 in Living Heritage conservation funding from the Victorian Government. State Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes said the Living Heritage funding would see the conservation and repair of the old Barmah Punt, one of Victorias most treasured and important historical relics and the oldest cable punt ferry. Works will see the punt lifted from its current location in the Jack Edwards Park and placed on a new cradle structure to allow for better understanding of its original form and allow improved public access. Funding will allow significant conservation works to remove it from rot and fungal attack in its current location, enable a structural and condition assessment to guide conservation works and construct a base under the punt and enable supports to be put in place to rest the punt in a stable position. Moira Shire Mayor Gary Cleveland said the Barmah punt was an important part of the shires history, providing a lifeline to the Barmah community between 1929 and 1966 when the bridge was built.
