ALMOST $10,000 has been gifted to community groups in Whorouly and Mt Beauty as part of the Victorian Governments Community Shades Grant Program. Burgoigee Creek Landcare Group received $4928.58 for a portable shade, while the Mount Beauty Neighbourhood Centre will build a shade structure courtesy of a $4545.45 grant. Jaclyn Symes (MLC, Northern Victoria) said shade in outdoor public spaces, when used along with other sun protection measures including sunscreen and protective clothing, forms the best defence against UV overexposure. Skin cancer is a major health issue for Victorians, yet its mostly preventable, thats why the people of Northern Victoria need to be sun smart, she said. Spending time outdoors is part of a healthy lifestyle, and it is important shade is easily available where people come together. The program provides grants for shade development, including building new shade, repairing existing shade, purchasing portable shade or creating natural shade by planting trees.
