Grants to help honour veterans

03 Jan 2018 Benalla Ensign, Benalla VIC (General News) The Victoria Government has provided a funding boost to help commemorate the sacrifice of local veterans, and educate the wider community about their service. State Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes has announced Anzac Centenary Grant program funding for the Burke Memorial Museum in Indigo Shire and for Winton Wetlands Committee of Management; and Restoring Community War Memorials and Avenues of Honour Grants Program funding for Mitchell Shire. Ms Symes said Indigo Shire would receive $5656 for an exhibition drawing on the World War I images and diaries of Beechworths Corporal William Forrest, to create a permanent record. Ms Symes said the Winton Wetlands Committee of Management would use their funding of $2900 to recognise World War I service members from the Winton North State School through the recreation of an Honour Roll to be installed. Ms Symes said funding of $6385 for Mitchell Shire would see Army-Navy-Air Force service plaques placed on the Kilmore war memorial and install additional seating to allow for the increased numbers of those attending memorial services. Country Victoria has a proud wartime history its important we give our veterans the support and tribute they deserve, Ms Symes said. This funding will help educate future generations, and allow people to better connect with the moments that shaped our history. Our veterans have selflessly protected us, so we have to do everything we can to protect them. Theyve earned it for the rest of their lives. This builds on the Labor Governments work to preserve and educate Victorians about the service of our veterans through the $5 million commitment to the Anzac Centenary and $1 million to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan.
