Huge boost for local female sport
WALLANs Greenhill Reserve will receive significant assistance in ensuring it can continue to cater for female sport with the announcement of funds approval for the upgrade to the lower pavilion at the reserve last week. Member for Yan Yean, Danielle Green, announced on Friday, April 15, a $421,000 boost to the upgrade of the existing pavilion which will feature four change rooms with their own amenities, unisex public toilets and umpires rooms. The funding will also provide for much needed timekeeping, first aid and kiosk facilities. Ms Green described the upgrade as a big win for women and female sporting participation. This upgrade will be a great boost for the community and was rightly identified as a priority by the Mitchell Shire. This is another great investment in Wallan, which is undergoing huge growth expansion. This is a great community with strong frameworks and governments at all levels must work together to support growth and deliver great outcomes. Mayor Cr Sue Marstaeller applauded the State Governments Interface Growth Fund for its contribution to the project and what it will mean for female sport in the community. This will encourage more females to take part in local sport and give them the best chance to be healthy, active and connected, she said. Currently, the pavilion has two male orientated change rooms, only one publicly accessible toilet and is unable to appropriately cater for the needs of participants, umpires, families, visiting spectators and game day volunteers. This funding means our community has facilities that meet netball Victorias requirements and give female players of all sports better access to appropriate facilities that meet modern needs, Cr Marstaeller said. Wallan currently fields four senior netball sides in the RDFNL competition on Saturdays and also three all girls sides in the junior football competition with the NFL on Sundays, with these numbers growing every year as female participation rates increase.
