19 Apr 2017 Wangaratta Chronicle, Wangaratta VIC (General News) FOUR local community groups have gained State Government grants to provide shade for much needed protection from harmful UV radiation. The 1st Yarrunga Scout Group has received $3162, Coronation Kinder will get $1545, and the Australian Breastfeeding Association Wangaratta and District Group has been granted $645 for portable shade structures. The Burgoigee Creek Landcare Group at Whorouly has also received $4928 for a portable shade structure. Jaclyn Symes (MLC, Northern Victoria) said the four groups were among more than 40 across Northern Victoria to share in almost $541,000 from the second round of the governments Community Shade Grants Program. Ms Symes said helping facilitate shade in outdoor public spaces helped to protect against UV over-exposure, and was part of the governments skin cancer prevention initiatives. Our Victorian Cancer Plan 2016-20 has set an ambitious target of saving 10,000 lives from cancer in the next 10 years, she said. It is estimated that 40,000 new cases of skin cancer are diagnosed in Victoria every year, and in 2015, 421 Victorians died from skin cancer, over 1.5 times the Victorian road toll that year.
