20 Jun 2018 Seymour Telegraph, Seymour VIC (General News) The Seymour Resource Recovery Centre (on the site of the old Seymour tip on Hume and Hovell Rd) will close from Monday, July 16 and re-open at a temporary site at the Mitchell Landfill in Hilldene (on Seymour-Tooborac Rd) from July 23, while plans for a new permanent centre are developed. The temporary centre will provide the full range of waste and resource recovery services. However, due to smaller capacity at the temporary Hilldene site, it will only operate on Mondays from 10 am to 3 pm and Saturdays from 9 am to noon. The Broadford Resource Recovery Centre will open for three extra days from July 16 onwards, opening from noon to 4 pm from Tuesday to Sunday. The Victorian Government also this week announced $500 000 towards a new permanent centre at Hilldene, which Mitchell Shire Mayor Rhonda Sanderson said will help provide an exciting new facility that could include a range of recycling services and a waste education centre. Cr Sanderson said Council hopes the new centre will be operating by 2020, with the temporary centre and extended days at Broadford in place until then. Drop-in sessions to gather ideas for the new permanent centre will be held on July 19 and 21 at Chittick Park Community Place. Cr Sanderson said she was grateful for the communitys patience while plans for the new permanent centre are developed. The Hume and Hovell site needs to close so we can undertake landfill rehabilitation of the old tip site as part of the legal requirements for operating the former landfill there, she said. Weve been working very hard behind the scenes to secure an alternative site so people from Seymour and surrounds can still access this important service while plans for a permanent centre are developed. Unfortunately, this means weve had to reduce days and hours at the new temporary Seymour site. We understand this will be inconvenient in the short term, however, it does mean people can still access the full range of services until the new permanent site is operational. Weve also added three extra days at Broadford to help a little as well. Its a bit further to travel, but if people cant get to the Seymour site on Monday or Saturday, they still have options. Cr Sanderson encouraged the community to share their ideas for the new permanent centre at the upcoming drop-in sessions. At the same time, were developing plans for an exciting new permanent facility at the Hilldene site, she said. The Victorian Government has announced a $500 000 contribution to the new facility through its Resource Recovery Infrastructure Fund. This funding will help us deliver an innovative facility for the region and Id like to thank Upper House Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes for supporting our application. Cr Sanderson said it was an exciting time to be looking at creating a new facility. There are so many exciting things happening in the recycling and resource recovery sector at the moment, she said. By working in partnership with the Victorian Government to secure this funding we hope to be a key player in this space so our community can benefit with increased local jobs, better environmental outcomes and less waste ending up in landfill. This is an opportunity for our community to let us know what sort of services they would like to access at the new permanent centre and what ideas they might have to encourage more recycling and innovative waste management and education throughout our shire. Drop-in sessions will be held at Chittick Park Community Place from 4.30 pm to 7 pm on Thursday, July 19 and from 10 am to 1.30 pm on Saturday, July 21, with all welcome.
