21 Sep 2016 Benalla Ensign, Benalla VIC (General News) The Andrews Labor Government is boosting safety in North Eastern Victoria to address a history of crashes on four roads. Roads and Road Safety Minister Luke Donnellan joined Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes to announce $9 million in safety upgrades to EuroaShepparton Rd, Buckland Gap Rd, EuroaMansfield Rd, and Midland Hwy. Works will include the installation of wire rope barriers, guard rails, rumble strips, hazard removal, drainage works and improvement to road pavement. Wire rope barriers are key to reducing crashes by preventing people from running off the road. The barriers also help to reduce the impact when a crash happens. Safety barriers will redirect vehicles that come off the road and away from roadside hazards, while audio tactile edge lines will alert drivers that they may be drifting dangerously off the road. The improvements will aim to reduce crashes at these sites by up to 72 per cent. During a five-year period there has been a high number of casualty crashes on these particular roads with nine people losing their lives and 21 seriously injured. The Safe System Road Infrastructure Program is funded by the Transport Accident Commission and delivered by VicRoads. It is an important part of the Labor Governments Towards Zero road safety vision, which is to have a 15 per cent reduction in serious injuries and less than 200 deaths on Victorian roads by 2020. Works are due to start late this year. These four roads have been the site of run-off-road crashes and were taking action to improve the safety of these roads curves, so we can reduce the risk and likelihood of crashes, Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes said.
