Safety boosted
28 Jun 2017 Seymour Telegraph, Seymour VIC (General News)
Rumble strips have been installed along the Goulburn Valley Hwy, from Eildon-Jamieson Rd to Seymour, to help boost safety on the sometimes treacherous road. Additionally, centre lines have been widened, separating vehicles travelling in opposite directions by up to 1 m, on the 57.6 km stretch of road. Across Victoria, six out of 10 crashes involve vehicles crossing the centre line, with fatigue and driver distraction among the major causes. Last year alone, run-off road and head-on crashes accounted for 159 deaths in Victoria. Researchers say that installing rumble strips on two-lane roads can reduce the risk of run-off road and head-on crashes by up to 20 per cent. Deaths on country roads are four times higher than on metropolitan roads and that is why Labor is investing in these safety upgrades, because we know that they save lives, Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes said. People make mistakes on the road, but no-one should die because of them thats why weve delivered these life-saving safety upgrades. Every high-speed rural road with moderate traffic will be fitted with rumble strips under the Labor Governments $1.2 billion Towards Zero 2016-2020 Road Safety Strategy and Action Plan.
