19 Sep 2017 North Central Review (Kilmore), Melbourne (General News) STUDENTS at Wandong Primary will soon have improved teaching and learning facilities thanks to additional school maintenance funding. Member for Northern Victoria, Jaclyn Symes, today visited the school to announce that a building firm have been awarded the contract for the works. The $135,000 project includes roof repair, ceiling replacement and internal painting to the library, staff and administration areas, as well as maintenance to the art and craft block that includes toilet block refurbishment, roof repair and gutter replacement. Wandong Primary School is a great school and this funding boost will mean its facilities can be upgraded to match the high quality teaching and learning environment the school provides, Ms Symes said. Wandong Primary School is expected to grow by almost 100 students over the next 10 years. This investment will ensure that the facilities will continue to provide a quality learning environment where students are engaged, stimulated and encouraged to be creative thinkers. Mid 2016 plans for the expansion of the Wandong Primary School grounds received a boost with the announcement of a government commitment to purchase adjacent land giving the school more room to grow. Ms Symes said that Wandong Primary was a great example of how Victorian children are being supported to reach their full potential. The Wandong School was first established on the site in 1882 with the removal of the school from Lightwood Flat to Wandong. The two acre site has not changed much since those days. Minor additions were made to the school until 1968 when a new two roomed school was erected. The land purchase will give the school the extra land it needs to accommodate future growth in student numbers and provide even better spaces for the children to learn and play. This along with the $135,000 upgrade works will give local families comfort there will be room at the local primary school for their children for years to come. The current project is part of a $2.5 billion state government investment to improve classrooms, upgrade facilities and build new schools across the state. This school building boom has created more than 1000 school upgrades and 56 new school projects across the state, supporting almost 5000 construction jobs to ensure all Victorian families have access to a great school no matter where they live.
