Shade grants now available
15 Nov 2017 Benalla Ensign, Benalla VIC (General News)
Local politicians are encouraging shady-behaviour from schools, sports clubs and community groups in Benalla. State Member for Euroa Steph Ryan is encouraging not-for-profit organisations to apply for grants of up to $50 000 to build, repair or replace shade structures as part of the Community Shade Grants Program. On the other side of state politics State Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes has just announced almost $250 000 in funding as part of the School Shade Grant Program. I am very pleased that North Victorian schools have again been successful in the latest round of shade grants, Ms Symes said. More shaded areas at our local schools are a simple way to protect our kids from the harmful effects of UV radiation and prevent skin cancer. Skin cancer is a major health issue for Australians, yet its mostly preventable. Schools play a critical role in helping kids learn how to be sun smart from an early age. In these warmer months, were all looking forward to spending more time outdoors, but I urge everyone to be sun smart, it could save your life. On the subject of community shade grants Ms Ryan said funding was available in three bands Band 1 up to $5000, Band 2 $5000 to $20 000, and Band 3 $20 000 $50 000. This program provides funding to build new shade structures, repair or replace existing shade structures, create natural shade by planting trees, purchase a portable shade, or a combination of those options, Ms Ryan said. Applicants may also apply for an additional $700 for sunscreen and hats. There are a number of community organisations in the Euroa electorate that could put additional shade structures to good use. With summer just around the corner it is important that organisations consider the effects of the sun and these grant programs are a great opportunity to be proactive.
