04 Nov 2016 Shepparton News, Shepparton VIC (General News) Murchisons heritage-listed Days Flour Mill will receive $500 000 in restoration works to preserve it for the community and tourism thanks to funding from the Victorian Governments Living Heritage Program. State Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes announced the funding yesterday morning and said the mill was identified in a Heritage Victoria audit as needing urgent upgrade and stabilisation works, which will include brickwork repairs and structural work on a chimney. The original machinery and steam engine is still in place, providing an outstanding historic record of 19th century milling methods. The mill has remained in the Day family since 1865 and can be credited for stimulating early development in the surrounding area. Were lucky to still be able to see the original workings of the mill and we have a responsibility to make sure it is preserved and able to be opened for visitors, Ms Symes said. The Living Heritage grants are an investment in both the past and future and I look forward to seeing the mill site preserved for generations to enjoy. The Days Flour Mill Complex was named after its original owners William and Anne Day and is considered the best preserved 19th century flour mill in Victoria, possibly Australia.
