21 Mar 2018 Alexandra Eildon Marysville Standard, Alexandra VIC (General News) THE intersection of Grant Street and Downey Street in Alexandra is widely regarded as one of the most troublesome in the area. A community information session is being run by VicRoads and the Murrindindi Shire Council on Wednesday, March 21 at 5.30pm at the Alexandra RSL to provide details on proposed works to the intersection. The session will provide details on planned line-marking and signage as well as answer any questions and discuss opportunities for feedback once the works are completed. This intersection is a key connection between the Maroondah and Goulburn Valley Highways, with VicRoads and the Murrindindi Shire Council looking at ways to improve safety. Some solutions proposed include removing turning lines from the intersection, installing painted islands and replacing the existing Give Way signs with Stop signs. State Member for Eildon Cindy McLeish said the intersection has been a big issue for Alexandra thats been hanging around for a really long time and shes pleased to finally see it being addressed. Improvements to the intersection are difficult due to the limited area around it and the close proximity of historical buildings such as the Corner Hotel and Alexandra Hotel and Cafe. While a roundabout or traffic lights would likely solve the problem, there is not enough room for a roundabout in the intersection that is a major thoroughfare for trucks and traffic lights would be less than ideal for the majority of the day. Its difficult with how close historical buildings are to the road but Im pleased to see VicRoads are engaging with the community on this, Ms McLeish said. Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes said the proposed improvements may help prevent potential accidents from occurring at the intersection in the future and that is why it is important that locals have their say. We want the people who use these roads every day to have their say about the proposed changes, she said. Information on the proposed works is currently available at the Alexandra Library.
