Almost 5000 racegoers attended the inaugural two-day Wangaratta Racing, Food and Wine Carnival on the weekend, which Wangaratta Turf Club chief executive officer Paul Hoysted described as fantastic for the club. Were really happy with the numbers, but we could always have more, and we will look at ways we can go grow it in the future, he said. There were no major issues and it was far easier to manage without having all the power issues. Mr Hoysted said the quality of the racing was strong, particularly in the Wangaratta Cup and the Vobis Gold Race. It was great to see local trainer Dan McCarthy pick up a second in the Vobis race, Mr Hoysted said. The track looked amazing after the renovations; it has pulled up extremely well after two days of racing which is a credit to the track team. He also thanked the State Government, through the Minister for Racing Martin Pakula and Jaclyn Symes (MLC, Northern Victoria) who attended the races yesterday to inspect the progress of the Wangaratta Master Plan Stage Two Development project. The State Government provided $1.9 million towards the stage two upgrades, including $1.5 million from the Victorian Racing Industry Fund and $400,000 from the Regional Jobs and Infrastructure Fund as well as $630,000 for new turf restoration equipment. The Ovens-Murray region will benefit from this massive redevelopment of Wangaratta Racecourse for decades, Mr Hoysted said I am sure when we have all the facilities, including the new grandstand, completed by August; events like these will attract even more people.Licensed by Copyright Agency.
