07 Sep 2016 Seymour Telegraph, Seymour VIC (General News) Broadford now has a dedicated space for youth services, with the towns new youth centre officially opened on Friday. Last year Mitchell Shire Council purchased the site of the Old Police Station, in High St, for the centre. The old site was demolished to make way for the new building, with works beginning in May. The Victorian Government chipped in $387 000 through the Growing Suburbs Fund, and in just three short months, the youth centre dream became a reality. The Youth Centre is ideally situated near the skate park, kindergarten, community centre, bowls club and police station, and provides a much more accommodating space for Mitchell Youth Services to deliver their range of programs. Council has managed the design, contract and ongoing maintenance of the building, and contributed $90 000 towards the project. Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes, who officially opened the centre, said the project provides spaces for youth programs, a kitchen, multi-use office space, storage and landscaping. What a fantastic outcome for the young people in this community, who now have a great place they can turn to for support and information when they need it the most, Ms Symes said. This project now provides Broadford and Mitchell Shire youth with a dedicated space. I am very proud to have worked closely with the council to deliver this vitality important project for Broadford. Ms Symes said the Victorian Governments $50 million Growing Suburbs Fund targets high priority projects in Victorias 10 fast growing interface councils including the Mitchell Shire to help build local facilities such as family and community centres, town centres, parks and reserves and playgrounds. The youth centre was one of five projects funded for Mitchell Shire in last years Growing Suburbs Fund.
