13 Sep 2016 North Central Review (Kilmore), Melbourne (General News) MEMBER for Northern Victoria, Jaclyn Symes, was pleased to officially open the new Broadford Youth Space on Friday, September 2 at a launch function attended by Mitchell Shire Councillors and youth development officers. The dedicated space for youth services was described by Ms Symes as a great example of co-operation between local council and state government departments, with $387,000 of funding for the project coming from an Andrews Government grant as part of the Growing Suburbs Fund. In attendance were numerous people committed to the project from its beginning including Mitchell Shire councillors Rhonda Sanderson, Ross Lee, Bill Chisholm, Des Callaghan and Mayor Cr Sue Marstaeller. Ms Symes said the construction of the new centre on the former Broadford police station site now provides an integrated space for youth programs, a kitchen, multi-use office space, storage and landscaping. What a fantastic outcome for the young people in this community, who now have a great place they can turn to for support and information when they need it the most Ms Symes said. I am very proud to have worked closely with the council to deliver this vitally important project for Broadford. Council CEO, Mr David Turnball paid special mention to the work of Youth Services Co-ordinator, Buffy Leadbeater and Capital Works Manager at Mitchell Shire, Gary Nugent. Special mentions must be made to both Buffy and Gary who did an enormous amount of work to ensure this project got off the ground and was completed in only three months, Mr Turnball said. The speed with which it has all come about has been amazing and appreciation must go to all the staff involved with the project. Cr Marstaeller was impressed with how the locality of the centre ties in to create a community hub alongside the pre-school, skate park and recreational areas. The new youth centre now makes up part of a terrific precinct for the community. It is one where people can be connected in a social and recreational capacity and provides Mitchell Youth Services with a place to work with the youth of the area, Cr Marstaeller said. Mitchell Shire thanks the state government for their assistance in providing the $387,000 in funding to assist with the councils contrbution for the project.
